Bill Dollarhide has written a new “how-tobook for those getting started in online genealogy research, entitled Getting Started in Genealogy Online . A noteworthy fact: the book does not start with the Internet.

Instead, Dollarhide provides some guidelines and principles for successful research. The book starts with home and offline sources, including genealogy interviews with older, and even, more distant relatives, and then moves on to information about how to obtain death certificates.

In fact, mention of the first URL (web address), is in the death certificates chapter, where he tells how to find death certificates. He provides excellent information, too, about funeral records, cemetery records, Social Security Death Index, federal census records, online lineage-linked databases, and many other helpful kinds of records. The chapters about the use of the Internet follow a logical procedure for good research, too. Dollarhide lists a URL and brief description of each web address mentioned.

A great detailed listing can be found in the chapter titled Genealogy Resource Centers in the States, contains a detailed listing of all the larger libraries, archives, and other record repositories throughout the United States, as well as, the District of Columbia, that would prove useful to the genealogist.

Still another chapter, titled Research Help for the Addicted contains online listings of professional genealogists, genealogy magazines, genealogy newsletters and genealogy blogs, in addition to, Dollarhide’s recommendation of the top twenty genealogy books. The book provides several pages of blanks forms, including a pedigree chart, a family group sheet, and a family data sheet, useful in beginning genealogy. The author encourages the reader to photocopy all forms, and use as needed.

This 64-page paperback booklet sells for $12.95 . It would make a great birthday or Christmas gift!
